East Africa's latest 'artificial' reef, set in the watery heart of the Mombasa Marine Park, barely 1.5km off the Kenyan port city, has been in place now for more than 4 years. The artificial reef has its origins in the deliberate sinking-on 27th October 2002- of a 77 meter decommissioned livestock carrier, the MV Dania, at a pre-designated site 50 meters beyond the naturally occurring reef off Mombasa's Bamburi Beach. The scuttling operation of the ship wreck, when eventually it went ahead, was the culminating act of ten months of painstaking planning and preparation in Mombasa. The MV Dania was built at Norway's Hatlo Verksted shipyard in 1965 as a general cargo vessel. She was then[..]

Created in 1950, this park essentially encloses two different environments: the striking 60 km stretch of moorland, peaks and forest atop the western Kinangop plateau and the eastern outcrop of the dense rainforest known as the salient. The park has varieties of fauna, flora and scenery not found anywhere else. Elephants and buffalos dominate, but other species including black rhino, spotted hyenas, bongo antelopes, bush pigs, giant forest hogs, black servals and rare black leopard, can also be seen. Look out for the few remaining lions (most were removed from the park to protect the endangered bongo antelopes) from the viewing platform next to the dramatic Chania falls and Karura falls.[..]

Tsavo National Park covers more than 20,800square kilometers. It is Kenya's largest national park and is split into Tsavo East and Tsavo West by the busy Mombasa/Nairobi Road and the railroad. During the last century, Tsavo West has been through changes connected with the great elephant herds. Thick forests were gradually turned into grasslands by elephants grazing patterns. By 1960, the elephant's population was up to at least 50,000. Because of poaching, they were reduced to only 5,000. Now the grasslands are changing again to new forest and scrub. Poaching has been a major problem in this park, and the black rhino population was reduced from about 7,000 in 1969 to less than 100 in[..]
