As a child, Africa fascinated me - a land where the wild and exotic animals of storybooks and zoos roamed free on the plains. And where Kenya was always the quintessential home of the safari. Many visits later I'm no less enthralled by this region of dramatic contrasts, and remarkable wildlife amid stunningly beautiful and varied landscapes that are still unencumbered by the trappings of man. And little compares to nights filled with the primal sounds of the bush - the hoots and laughs of hyenas, the grumble of distant lions and the snorts of a hippo. Kenya, the land where safari was born, is also known as the cradle of mankind - evidence of some of the earliest human settlements has been found here...

Ever thought about gap year volunteering? What about spending part of your gap year on an African safari? How about combining volunteering in Africa - where you can make a positive impact on the lives of some of the poorest people in the world - with an adventure holiday where you can go bungee jumping of Victoria Falls or white water rafting down the Zambezi? Now that's what I call an adventure vacation! It is perfectly possible to combine the two. In fact we recommend it and, after giving your valuable time to an African volunteer project, you will deserve a reward for your efforts. Not that volunteering in Africa is necessarily hard physical work, but we'd be lying if we said it couldn't be...

Decorations can include camouflage netting (which could form a sort of tent or cave for a play area), stuffed animals, and anything with an animal print can add to the festivities. Snakes and vines can be draped in doorways or from ceilings and a CD of animal sounds or jungle drums can be used to add ambience. Safari Games to be played might include: Wild Animal Charades Game: Names of various...

Adventure travel used to be thought of as backpackers traipsing their way around a county, a continent, or even the world. The challenge was to go as far as possible and survive on as little money and creature comforts as one could endure. In fact, if you weren't roughing it you were demoted from the status of traveler to tourist. Many backpackers, especially those on the road for long periods, often go off the beaten tack and discover the less touristy attractions. However, although many would treat themselves to say an elephant ride in Thailand or maybe a bungy jump in New Zealand, a lot of the back packers tended to chill out and hang out as they lazily plodded from place to place. In the...
